Equifax data hack – Six things to take away

| Sep 15, 2017 | Credit Repair, Firm News

  1. This is a big one. 143 million people had their social security number and credit card info stolen. It is bigger than the Target breach, and while not as big as the Yahoo breach, they have a lot of your info.
  2. Nobody is immune, unless you have no credit. Even if you think you don’t do business with Equifax, they have your info.
  3. What to do? For starters, you can and should review your free annual credit report, put on a credit freeze, or maybe just request a fraud alert.
  4. See if you are part of this at equifaxsecurity2017.com. They offer credit monitoring, but some are advising against it? The original credit monitoring required you to agree not to sue them, but they are now providing credit monitoring without requiring you to so promise.
  5. Watch for scams – if someone calls & says they’re from Equifax, hang up.

File your taxes early — as soon as you have the tax information you need, before a scammer can. Respond right away to letters from the IRS. (I once had a client who was victimized, but the “refund” got intercepted and paid off their student loan – it was a real mess to clean up)

6. I expect there will be a push for a better bio metric identifier, such as fingerprinting, facial or retina scans, than just a social security number –   it shouldn’t be easier to open a credit card in my name than it is to open my iphone.
